PTFE tapes are used in a sealing application as well as in high technology applications<\/h1><\/div>

PTFE tape is a thin film of unsintered PTFE. This product is well known by the general public for its use in plumbing as TST. This is not its only use. Indeed, highly technical applications of unsintered PTFE tape are spreading in demanding applications for energy and data cables.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

The TST, for Thread Seal Tape, is common in the general public for plumbing work. This is why it is also known as plumber\u2019s tape or Teflon tape, even if it only refers to the generic name, and not the trademark by Chemours. This smooth tape is used to seal pipe threads. Available as TST spools, this products makes it easy to wind around pipe threads, thus lubricating the connection and allowing a deeper tightening of screws, while improving leakage prevention.<\/span><\/p>\n

While it seems common, it is also widely used in industrial pipes for demanding fluid sealing. Special grades are optimized for example for drinking water, but also for gas or even medical gases. In this case, the application requires grease-free tape, to preserve the purity of the gas. There again, the resistance of PTFE to temperature, corrosion, its purity and sealing properties are required.<\/span><\/p>\n

The plumber\u2019s tape is commonly white, and these dedicated TST tapes are found in different colors to indicate the pipes where they can be used, depending on fluids (or gases), pressure, and so on\u2026 <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

PTFE tape is not limited to the TST applications. Indeed, it has long been used in highly demanding industries, where it shows the best results regarding performance and safety.<\/p>\n
The best example is the use of PTFE tape in electrical cables. PTFE is wrapped around the conductor. This process also allows for safer and more flexible cable for the same insulation, compared to cables with extruded insulation. What\u2019s more, PTFE offers high electrical insulation and high temperature resistance.<\/div>\n

Low density PTFE tapes are also unrivalled for data transmission. They offer amongst the best dielectric properties at high frequency. They are the best solution to protect the signal integrity in microwave cables. The process to insulate coaxial cable is the same as the one for electrical cables: wrapping the low-density PTFE tape around the conductor.<\/div>\n

How to choose PTFE tape for your activity?<\/h2><\/div>

Not all PTFE tapes can be used for all applications. The choice will be based on multiple criteria such as purity, mechanical resistance or density.<\/p>\n
Purity is important for the safety and consistency of your applications. Pollutants can really affect the mechanical or insulating properties of the final product. In the same way that you can\u2019t afford contaminants when dealing with (for example) medical gases, impurities in PTFE tape can lead to critical failure of cables.<\/div>\n

Mechanical resistance is obviously another important criteria. In daily life, we all know the struggle of products that are hardly handled. Good resistance also allows faster wrapping of cables.<\/p>\n

Density is an important point in PTFE tapes. It does not just affect mechanical properties but the whole performance of the tape, including insulation and dielectric. Density is due to the extrusion process, which stretches PTFE. While sintered bulk PTFE density is around 2.15, unsintered PTFE tape density will be under 1.6 before wrapping. And as you can imagine low density PTFE tapes are typically under 1.2. The nominal density will then assume which final product PTFE will fulfill its mission. What\u2019s more, density and thickness fluctuations are also impacting the consistency and the easy handling of the final product.<\/div>\n
